Title: Chasing History: The Day We Witnessed One of the Most Powerful Tornadoes Ever Recorded
On May 21st, 2024, I didn’t just chase a storm — I witnessed history.
Greenfield, Iowa will forever be etched in my memory as the place where nature showed its full, awe-inspiring, and terrifying power. What formed that day became the third most powerful tornado ever recorded. And I wasn’t alone when I saw it. Sitting beside me was my grandmother, Barb — someone who had lived through decades of life, but nothing quite like this.
The buildup that afternoon felt different. If you’ve chased storms long enough, you learn to read the sky like a language. The atmosphere was unstable, charged, almost restless. The kind of energy that makes your instincts sharpen. Every radar update, every shift in the wind, every cloud formation was pointing toward something significant.
But even then, nothing prepares you for the moment it actually happens.
As the storm began to organize near Greenfield, the structure became textbook… then quickly evolved into something far more intense. The rotation tightened. The cloud base lowered. And then, almost violently, the tornado dropped.
What stood in front of us wasn’t just a funnel — it was a force of nature on a scale that’s hard to describe. Massive. Violent. Relentless. The kind of tornado that commands respect immediately, no matter how experienced you are.
I glanced over at my grandma.
She wasn’t afraid — she was in awe.
There’s something powerful about sharing a moment like that with family. Storm chasing is often a solitary or team-driven pursuit, but having her there added a completely different layer. This wasn’t just about documenting a storm anymore. It was about experiencing something together that neither of us would ever forget.
We watched as the tornado carved across the landscape, a reminder of just how small we are compared to the forces of nature. At the same time, there was a strange beauty to it — the structure, the motion, the raw energy. It’s why storm chasers do what we do. Not for danger, but for understanding… and respect.
Later, as reports came in and the data was analyzed, the magnitude of what we had witnessed became clear. This wasn’t just another tornado. It ranked among the most powerful ever recorded.
That realization hit differently.
It’s one thing to chase storms. It’s another to stand in front of something that will be studied, remembered, and talked about for years to come.
And through it all, I keep coming back to one simple thought:
I got to share that moment with my grandma.
Out of all the miles driven, storms tracked, and close calls experienced, that’s what makes this one unforgettable.
Not just the power of the tornado…
…but the people you experience it with.

Title: When the Storm Hits Home: The Villa Ridge Tornado
March 14th, 2025, changed everything for me.
I’ve spent years chasing storms across the country, putting myself in position to witness nature at its most powerful. I’ve seen massive tornadoes carve through open fields, tear across rural landscapes, and leave behind scars that stretch for miles.
But this time… it was different.
This time, it came to me.
Villa Ridge isn’t just another dot on the map. It’s home. It’s familiar roads, neighbors you know by name, and places filled with memories. When the warnings started coming in that day, there was an uneasy feeling that settled in — the kind you don’t get when you’re out chasing somewhere else.
Because this time, there was nowhere to “leave behind.”
As the storm approached, everything I’ve learned as a storm chaser kicked in. The structure, the rotation, the conditions — I knew what it meant. I knew what was coming.
And then it hit.
The sound is what I’ll never forget. People often describe tornadoes as sounding like a freight train, but when it’s hitting your own home, it’s more than a sound — it’s a force you feel in your chest. A violent, overwhelming roar that reminds you instantly how little control you actually have.
When it was over, the silence felt just as loud.
I stepped outside to a scene that didn’t feel real.
My roof — gone.
My deck — gone.
Pieces of my home scattered, broken, stripped away in a matter of moments.
But what hit even harder was looking beyond my own house.
The devastation across Villa Ridge was widespread. Homes damaged. Trees uprooted. Lives disrupted in ways that go far beyond property. This wasn’t just something I observed through a lens or from a safe distance. This was my community, my neighbors, my reality.
And in that moment, I felt something I don’t always feel while chasing:
Helplessness.
As storm chasers, we respect the power of nature. We study it, pursue it, and try to understand it. But when you’re standing in the middle of the aftermath in your own hometown, that respect deepens into something much heavier.
It becomes personal.
At the same time, it reinforced something I’ve always believed.
This is why I chase.
Not for adrenaline. Not for the thrill. But to show people what these storms are truly capable of. To help others understand that this isn’t just weather — it’s power that can change lives in seconds.
Seeing Villa Ridge the way it looked after that tornado reminded me why awareness matters. Why preparation matters. Why respect for these storms isn’t optional — it’s necessary.
I lost part of my home that day.
But I gained something too — a deeper purpose.
Because now, when I share footage, when I tell these stories, when I stand in front of a storm… I’m not just speaking from experience.
I’m speaking from home.
And that changes everything.
